Every family has a story worth discovering—and preserving.
Following our introductory presentation, Genealogy: Tracing Your Italian Family Story, the Naples Italian American Foundation will offer a four-week, hands-on workshop series designed to help participants begin building, organizing, and exploring their own family histories.
Participants will work step by step with their own names, photographs, documents, family stories, and research questions in a welcoming and supportive setting. No previous genealogy experience is required.
What We Will Explore
Workshop 1: Jan 13 – Beginning with What You Know
Start with yourself and work backward. Identify the names, dates, places, photographs, documents, and family stories you already have, and learn how to organize them into a useful foundation for future research.
Workshop 2: Jan 20 – Finding Your Family in American Records
Explore census records, immigration and naturalization documents, passenger lists, military records, obituaries, cemetery records, and other sources that can help connect your family’s life in America with its origins in Italy.
Workshop 3: Jan 27 – Tracing Your Family to Italy
Learn how to identify your ancestral town and begin using Italian civil records, including birth, marriage, and death records. We will introduce Antenati and other resources and explain the basic structure of Italian records—even for those who do not speak Italian.
Workshop 4: Feb 3 – Building and Preserving Your Family Story
Bring your discoveries together into a family tree and a meaningful family narrative. We will discuss research organization, family history software, photographs, source documentation, DNA testing, and ways to preserve and share your work with children and grandchildren.
Workshop Details
📅 Four consecutive Wednesdays beginning January 13
🕒 3:00 – 4:30 90 minutes per session
📍 Naples Italian American Foundation
One registration covers all four workshops. Because each session builds upon the previous one, participants are encouraged to attend the complete series.
Participants may bring a laptop or tablet, although one is not required. Simple worksheets and take-home materials will be provided.

NIAF Members: $40 for the complete four-workshop series.
Non-Members: $80 for the complete four-workshop series.
