Join us for a fascinating illustrated presentation by Michael J. Ranieri exploring the remarkable history of Venice — La Serenissima, “The Most Serene Republic.”

Discover how a community of refugees living on muddy islands in a shallow lagoon grew into one of the richest, most powerful, and most beautiful cities in the world.

This engaging presentation will trace Venice’s rise from its beginnings in the Venetian Lagoon to its emergence as a major maritime and commercial power. Learn how Venice turned its unique geography into an advantage, developed an extensive trading network connecting Europe with Constantinople and the eastern Mediterranean, and built the extraordinary Arsenal that supported its naval strength.

The presentation will also explore Venice’s relationship with the Byzantine world, the importance of the salt and spice trades, the arrival of the relics of St. Mark, the growth of its overseas empire, and the tremendous wealth that helped create landmarks such as St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, along with Venice’s extraordinary contributions to art, music, architecture, ceremony, and culture.

Finally, we will look at Venice today and the challenges facing this one-of-a-kind city, including mass tourism, flooding, environmental pressures, and ongoing efforts to preserve Venice for future generations.

Approximate presentation length: 45–60 minutes, followed by questions and discussion.
