This month, we’re featuring Se Dio Vuole (If God Wills)-With English Subtitles
Tommaso is a successful and respected heart surgeon who is also a committed atheist. His life is turned upside down when his son, Andrea, announces that he wants to become a priest. Convinced that the charismatic Father Pietro has manipulated his son, Tommaso secretly investigates the priest while Andrea is away at a monastery retreat. To prevent Tommaso from exposing him, Father Pietro asks him to help renovate a church for a month. As they work together, Tommaso gradually becomes more compassionate, improves his relationships with his family and patients, and begins to reconsider some of his long-held beliefs. Father Pietro also shares his faith with Tommaso, explaining that everything happens according to God’s plan. Later, Tommaso discovers that Andrea has changed his mind about becoming a priest after realizing it was not his true calling. Andrea plans to continue his medical studies instead, and Father Pietro had known this all along. Before Tommaso can confront him, Father Pietro is seriously injured in an accident and is brought to Tommaso’s hospital with little chance of survival. Tommaso finishes the church renovation they had started together and reflects on Father Pietro’s teachings, suggesting that the experience has profoundly changed his outlook on life.
But as always, the evening is about more than the film.
It’s about gathering together sharing a meal, enjoying a glass of wine, and connecting with friends, both old and new, in a setting that feels like home.
