The story follows Giuseppe Garibaldi, a modest and good-natured librarian from a small mountain village who lives a quiet, simple life far removed from the world of politics. Through an unexpected twist of events, his name is chosen as a protest vote during the election for President of the Italian Republic. To everyone’s surprise, Giuseppe Garibaldi is not just the name of a famous Italian historical figure — there is actually a living man with that exact name, and he suddenly finds himself elected President.
Completely unprepared for life in Rome and the formality of the presidential palace, Giuseppe brings his honesty, common sense, and down-to-earth personality into a world filled with political maneuvering, bureaucracy, and carefully scripted appearances. Rather than changing to fit the political system, he begins approaching problems in his own straightforward and unconventional way, creating plenty of humorous and unexpected situations.
As Giuseppe adjusts to his extraordinary new role, he discovers that being President is far more complicated than he ever imagined. Along the way, the film explores themes of integrity, leadership, public trust, and the idea that sometimes an ordinary person can make an extraordinary difference.
Charming, witty, and filled with warmth, Benvenuto Presidente! offers plenty of laughs while also providing a playful look at Italian politics and society.
But as always, the evening is about more than the film.
It’s about gathering together sharing a meal, enjoying a glass of wine, and connecting with friends, both old and new, in a setting that feels like home.
